Midnight Magic is Grody to the Max

Because of the oh so wildly sucessful "Halloween theme" of last year's Midnight Magic (read: a few band members dressed up in random costumes and the Men's Volleyball team dressed up in the 70's costumes that they wore before Midnight Magic ever had a theme), they decided to give an 80s theme to this year's Midnight Magic. The theme worked at least slightly better this year despite the almost complete lack of advertisement (we only found out by looking at the small print in a quarter-page-sized ad in the school paper). So at least (some of) the groups that performed dressed up, i.e. the MCIA, the pep band, and the women's basketball team. The band looked pretty awesome while dressed in the crappiest outfits that we could come up with, aka 80s attire.

So here's the part where I'm wildly underqualified to actually write this article: I didn't actually see much of Midnight Magic because I was in the back row and couldn't really see or hear what was going on very well. But that's alright, the people that actually attended didn't see much either since people started walking out on Midnight Magic in droves starting at about the 45 minute mark. I guess that's just about the point when you realize that the most exciting part of the event was probably the free cotton candy they had outside.

Actually I take that back. The most exciting part was probably those awesome retractable "rip 'em eaters" signs that the alumni association was handing out. Those were pretty sweet.

Anywho, the ever decreasing number of people left in the crowd bore witness to what was sort of a wannabe version of the NBA All Star Weekend that manages to be even lamer and superficial than the real thing. Now, this is now the third year that I've written about Midnight Magic, and it's always the same. They announce the teams, they scrimmage for a little bit, the MCIA performs, they have a random competition between random people from the audience, they have a three-point competition between the men's and women's teams, and they have a slam dunk contest. snore, snore, snore. Here's what I guess probably happened even though I didn't see it:

-The MCIA danced competently
-the girls lost the three point competition
-and of course everyone loses when watching the slam dunk competition

Sigh. Every year it just feels like they put less and less effort into planning this event.

Suggestions on how to make Midnight Magic more exciting:

1. robots
2. bounce castles
3. WALL OF FIRE
4. magicians
5. legitimate entertainment

I guess there's always hope for next year.*

*false. There is no hope for next year.

Introductions

Welcome to what will at least temporarily be your one-stop shop for all things related to making fun of the things that UCI athletic band members go through. I'm Allison, the Social Director of the Anteater Pep Band for the '07-'08 school year.

A brief, vague, and wildly inaccurate history:
Coolnotes used to be its own website, which was another version of a previous website, so really this is more like at least the third (if not the fourth) incarnation of coolnotes, so I guess calling it coolnotes 2 is a rather glaring misnomer. I don't even know if the original coolnotes started out as a humor publication, but that's what it became when I was last involved with it, and that's the format that I'm sticking to.

So there should be actual content up soon enough. I mean, c'mon, Midnight Magic can only stay un-made-fun-of for so long.
